The Dexa Technician / Care Coordinator performs procedures using bone density x-ray equipment and coordinates patient care for bone density services, under supervision of physician. The technician is responsible for completing bone densitometry exams according to prescribed exam protocols; processing bone density study measurements using computer generated methods; and proper use of electronic medical record with patient chart documentation. Performs organizational, administrative, patient care and environmental tasks as needed to facilitate the highest quality of patient care and the efficient utilization of available resources within the scope of practice.
Essential Duties
- Ensures an optimal patient experience by adhering to the organization’s policies and procedures, mission, vision and foundations. Treats each patient as their most important priority.
- Prepares the patient for a DXA (Dual X-ray Absorptometry) exam with clear instructions and a thorough explanation of the procedure.
- Obtains a thorough patient history as it relates to the exam to be completed.
- Positions patient on examining table, sets up and adjusts equipment to view specific body area as requested by physician.
- Utilizes electronic patient information systems to verify patient name, date, appropriate exam, and any special exam specific comments from the physician.
- Transfers patients to and from imaging tables.
- Produces a diagnostic, high quality scan for interpretation. Reviews the DEXA scan for accuracy and reports results/issues to supervising physician.
- Performs necessary computer functions associated with patient exam. Includes the Radiology Information System and PACS.
- Periodically performs precision testing to monitor ongoing precision of measurements. Initiates service requests for any DEXA scanner issues.
- Assists with patient care procedures as directed by Radiology Technologist. Assists other staff members as needed.
- Assists Radiology Technologist with patient observation. Reports abnormal observations of patient conditions immediately to radiology staff.
- Assists patients as needed with walking, transfers, dressing(s) and toileting needs.
- Assists with rooming patients, patient transfers and discharging patients from the facility.
- Assists Radiology Technologist with room turn over to improve center efficiency.
- Assists with medical record preparation, maintenance, and filing.
- Provides a friendly, safe, timely, quality driven environment responsive to the needs of the patients.
- Responds with flexibility to changing workload and/or patient assignments. Demonstrates ability to be organized and function under stressful situations.
- Prepares patients for examination by performing preliminary physical tests, e.g., taking blood pressure, weight, temperature and reporting patient history summary.
- Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock, restocking exam rooms with linen, sheets, etc.
- Assists visitors, staff and physicians utilizing good guest relations.
- Responds in a timely manner to meet the needs of the patient and radiology staff.
- Attends staff meetings and educational opportunities.
- Prioritizes job responsibilities to facilitate optimum patient care and utilization of resources.
- Performs other tasks and special projects as assigned by management.

Certifications & Licensure
- ARRT/DXA Certified
- Valid Basic Life Support Certification (BLS)
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Certification preferred
Education & Experience
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Current student enrolled in an accredited Radiology program or CMA with 1 – 2 years related experience in a medical office preferred
- 1+ year Dexa Scan experience preferred
