Registered Nurse - Breast Center

Job Summary

The Registered Nurse-Breast Center provides professional nursing support to the physicians, advanced practice providers, and clinical team in the evaluation and management of patients receiving breast health services. The RN works collaboratively with all members of the care team to provide safe, efficient, and patient-centered care.

The RN performs responsibilities similar to other clinical team members within the breast clinic while providing an additional level of nursing assessment, clinical knowledge, critical thinking, patient education, and clinical decision-making within the RN's scope of practice.

The RN supports patients throughout their clinic experience, including patient assessment, telephone triage, care coordination, procedure preparation and follow-up, patient education, medication and symptom assessment, and other nursing services appropriate to the patient's needs and the RN's scope of practice.

Essential Duties

  • Serves as a clinical resource for patients and team members, assists in identifying and addressing patient needs, and appropriately escalates clinical concerns to the physician or other healthcare provider.
  • Promotes a positive patient experience by following required policies and procedures while treating each patient as their most important priority.
  • Performs nursing assessment of patients presenting for breast care services.
  • Reviews patient information and available diagnostic results in preparation for clinic visits.
  • Reviews relevant medical history, medications, allergies, symptoms, diagnostic results, and other clinical information.
  • Identifies clinical concerns, changes in condition, or potential complications and communicates appropriately with the providers.
  • Uses nursing judgment to determine appropriate follow-up, escalation, and care coordination within scope of practice.
  • Provides nursing care appropriate to the patient's condition and treatment plan.
  • Receives and clinically triages patient calls related to symptoms, medications, procedures, postoperative concerns, diagnostic testing, and other patient needs.
  • Determines when patient concerns can be addressed through education or established protocols and when provider evaluation or intervention is indicated.
  • Provides clinical education and reinforces provider instructions.
  • Prepares patients for examination and in-office procedures.
  • Supports the providers during clinic visits and procedures.
  • Assists with coordination of diagnostic breast procedures and additional testing as directed by the physician.
  • Serves as a clinical resource to the CMA and other members of the breast clinic team.
  • Coordinates referrals, diagnostic testing, procedures, and follow-up care as directed.
  • Communicates with outside providers and healthcare organizations to obtain information necessary for patient care.
  • Follows up on outstanding orders, testing, results, or other clinical needs.
  • Identifies barriers or delays in care and communicates concerns to the appropriate team member.
  • Provides nursing assessment and follow-up for patients following breast procedures and surgery.
  • Assesses wounds, incisions, drains, pain, swelling, and other postoperative concerns within scope and competency.
  • Provides dressing changes, drain care/removal, and other nursing services as appropriate to the patient's plan of care.
  • Completes accurate and timely documentation in the medical record.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality and complies with HIPAA and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Participates in continuous quality improvement and patient safety initiatives to better serve the patient and family and to improve the quality of services provided.
  • Performs other duties and special projects assigned by management.

Certifications & Licensure

  • Current Licensure in the State of Nebraska as a Registered Nurse (RN)
  • Current Basic Life Support Certification (BLS)

Education & Experience

  • Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program required
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of professional nursing preferred
  • Two to five years of nursing experience preferred
  • Prior experience in a physician's office preferred
