Aching Pain in Arms and Legs: Common Causes, Symptoms, and Relief Options

Aching pain in arms and legs may feel dull, heavy, throbbing, sore, or difficult to locate. It can develop after physical activity, appear during an illness, or come and go without an obvious trigger. Some people notice discomfort in one limb, while others experience symptoms on both sides of the body. Stiffness, tingling, swelling, numbness, or weakness may occur with the ache.

Many cases are linked to muscle overuse or a minor injury and improve with rest. Persistent discomfort, however, can signal an underlying condition involving the muscles, joints, nerves, spine, or blood vessels. Recognizing the pattern can help your healthcare provider decide whether you need a physical examination, laboratory tests, medical imaging, or another type of evaluation.

Common Conditions That Cause Arm and Leg Pain

Arm pain and leg pain can begin in muscles, joints, bones, nerves, blood vessels, or nearby tissues. Because these structures work together, discomfort from one area may spread or feel as though it originates somewhere else.

Muscle strain and overuse

Exercise, lifting, repetitive work, prolonged standing, or a sudden increase in physical activity can strain muscle fibers. Soreness may not appear immediately. It can become noticeable later that day or the following morning.

Overuse discomfort usually improves as the tissue recovers. Pain that becomes sharper, causes marked swelling, or prevents normal movement may indicate a more significant injury.

Joint and tendon problems

Arthritis, tendon irritation, and inflammation around a joint can produce aching that extends into a nearby limb. Shoulder problems may cause discomfort down an arm, while hip or knee conditions may contribute to pain through the thigh or lower leg.

People with joint-related symptoms may also experience:

  • Stiffness after resting or waking
  • Swelling or warmth around a joint
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Grinding, catching, or clicking
  • Pain that increases with repeated use

Nerve compression

A compressed or irritated nerve can cause aching, burning, tingling, numbness, or electric sensations. The source may be in the neck, lower back, elbow, wrist, hip, or another location along the nerve.

For example, a problem in the cervical spine may produce symptoms in an arm or hand. A lower-back problem may send discomfort into a hip, leg, or foot. Spinal stenosis, a narrowing of spaces within the spine, can place pressure on nerves and contribute to limb symptoms.

Circulation problems

Blood vessels deliver oxygen and nutrients to working tissue. If circulation is reduced, your muscles may not be getting enough blood during activity. Peripheral artery disease can cause aching, cramping, or heaviness in the legs, particularly when walking. Symptoms may improve after stopping to rest.

Circulatory problems require medical assessment. Don't assume that recurring leg discomfort is simply part of aging or poor fitness.

Illness and medication effects

Viral illnesses can cause muscle aches across several areas of the body. Some prescription medicines may also contribute to soreness, cramping, or weakness. Tell your provider about all prescriptions, nonprescription products, and supplements you use. Don't stop a prescribed medicine unless the clinician who manages it advises you to do so.

Symptoms and Pain Patterns to Watch

The way discomfort behaves may offer clues about its source. Before an appointment, note when the symptoms began, which limbs are affected, and whether activity, rest, posture, or time of day changes the sensation.

Pain in the arms and legs that comes and goes can be harder to describe during an appointment. A short symptom log may help. Record the time of day, duration, activity before the episode, severity, and any accompanying changes.

Seek medical guidance when symptoms:

  • Continue despite several days of reasonable home care
  • Repeatedly return without a clear trigger
  • Interfere with walking, lifting, sleeping, or working
  • Occur with persistent stiffness or joint swelling
  • Include numbness, tingling, or weakness
  • Become more frequent or severe
  • Follow a fall, collision, or other injury
  • Begin after a medication change

Sudden severe symptoms may require faster care. Seek urgent medical attention for new weakness on one side, difficulty speaking, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, fainting, a cold or pale limb, or major swelling in one arm or leg. A clinician can determine the appropriate setting for evaluation.

Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Overuse and Other Sources of Chronic Pain

Chronic pain lasts or recurs beyond the expected recovery period. It may result from a previous injury, ongoing inflammation, nerve dysfunction, or a condition affecting several parts of the body.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation in and around joints. It commonly produces pain, swelling, and stiffness in matching joints on both sides of the body, such as both wrists or both knees. Morning stiffness may last longer than the brief stiffness some people experience after sleeping.

A diagnosis isn't based on imaging alone. A healthcare provider may use medical history, physical findings, blood tests, and imaging together. X-rays can document structural changes, while MRI or ultrasound may show inflammation and soft-tissue findings that aren't visible on a standard X-ray.

Psoriatic arthritis is associated with psoriasis, although joint symptoms and skin changes don't always appear at the same time. It may affect the fingers, toes, spine, knees, or other joints. Some people develop swelling along an entire finger or toe, along with discomfort where tendons and ligaments attach to bone.

Imaging may help a treating provider assess joint and soft-tissue changes, distinguish the condition from other forms of arthritis, or monitor progression.

Fibromyalgia may cause widespread tenderness, fatigue, disrupted sleep, and heightened sensitivity to discomfort. Symptoms can involve the arms, legs, neck, shoulders, and back.

There's no single imaging study that confirms fibromyalgia. A provider may diagnose it after reviewing symptoms and considering other possible conditions. Imaging can still be useful when the clinical evaluation suggests a separate joint, spinal, or soft-tissue problem.

Polymyalgia rheumatica usually causes aching and stiffness in the shoulders, neck, hips, or thighs. It primarily affects older adults and can make dressing, standing from a chair, or lifting the arms difficult. Laboratory testing and clinical evaluation play central roles in diagnosis, while imaging may be used in selected cases.

Severe muscle aches or unexplained weakness may arise from metabolic, neurological, vascular, or inflammatory conditions. Pain on one side of the body can also require a different evaluation from symmetrical discomfort. Providers consider the complete symptom pattern rather than relying on the location of the ache alone.

How Medical Imaging May Help Identify the Source

Not every episode of limb pain requires a scan. A healthcare provider generally begins by asking about your health history, recent activity, injuries, medications, and accompanying symptoms. The provider may examine strength, reflexes, circulation, joint movement, tenderness, and swelling before deciding whether imaging is appropriate.

When a scan is ordered, the choice depends on the suspected source.

X-ray

X-rays are often used to assess bones, joint alignment, fractures, and certain arthritis changes. They provide less detail about muscles, tendons, and nerves than MRI or ultrasound.

MRI

MRI creates detailed views of soft tissues and may help assess ligaments, tendons, cartilage, muscles, nerves, joints, and the spine. It can be useful when symptoms suggest a soft-tissue injury, nerve compression, spinal condition, or inflammatory change.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create images of structures inside the body. It may be used to examine tendons, muscles, fluid collections, blood flow, or inflammation around certain joints. Because the images are produced in real time, the technologist or radiologist may be able to evaluate a structure during movement. 

CT

CT creates cross-sectional images and may be ordered to examine bones, joints, blood vessels, or internal structures. It can provide useful detail when an X-ray doesn't answer the clinical question or when rapid imaging is needed.

Imaging results are interpreted alongside the rest of the medical evaluation. A scan may:

  1. Identify a structural source of pain.
  2. Show the location and extent of an injury.
  3. Help rule out a suspected problem.
  4. Guide treatment planning or a referral.
  5. Provide a baseline for monitoring a condition.

A normal scan doesn't mean the symptoms are unimportant. Some causes of limb pain don't produce visible changes on imaging. Your referring provider may recommend laboratory tests, nerve studies, physical therapy, medication management, or another assessment based on the full clinical picture.

Treatment and Relief Options for Aching Limbs

Treatment depends on what is causing the discomfort. Strategies that help a minor muscle strain may not be appropriate for nerve compression, inflammatory arthritis, or reduced circulation.

For mild soreness associated with activity, your provider may recommend a temporary reduction in strenuous exercise, gentle movement, adequate hydration, and sufficient sleep. Prolonged inactivity can increase stiffness, so returning to normal movement gradually may be better than extended bed rest.

Heat may relax tense muscles, while a cold pack may help after a recent minor injury. Protect the skin by wrapping the pack and limiting the application time. People with reduced sensation or circulation problems should speak with a provider before using heat or cold.

Nonprescription medication may help some people, but it's not safe for everyone. Health conditions, allergies, pregnancy, and interactions with other medicines may affect which products are appropriate. Follow the label and consult a clinician or pharmacist when uncertain.

Depending on the diagnosis, a care plan may include:

  • Physical therapy to improve movement, strength, balance, or flexibility
  • Activity modification while an injured area heals
  • Medication for inflammation, nerve symptoms, or an underlying disease
  • Supportive devices or ergonomic changes
  • Treatment directed at a circulation problem
  • Image-guided procedures when clinically appropriate
  • Referral to rheumatology, orthopedics, neurology, vascular care, or another specialty

The goal isn't simply to mask discomfort. An accurate assessment helps the care team choose treatment that addresses the likely source and reduces the chance of aggravating the problem.
